[…] But during that call, Dina told Tom something he didn't know. Two airplanes had hit the World Trade Center. That information changed everything. Over the next several minutes, more calls began leaving Flight 93. Mark Bingham called his mother. He told her he was aboard Flight 93 and that the airplane had been hijacked. Jeremy Glick reached his wife, Liz. Todd Beamer attempted to call home, but instead reached a telephone operator. That connection would remain open for almost the entire rest of the flight. Through those calls, a picture of what was happening on board began to emerge. The hijackers had knives, they claimed to have a bomb, and at least one person had been stabbed. […]
