Should a mashpia be paid? Featuring Reb Fitz Rabin Ep. 18
Should a Mashpia Be Paid?
Navigating Torah, Finance, and Spiritual Guidance in the Chabad World - EPISODE 18
In this highly anticipated and sensitive conversation on עשה לך רב Ase L'cho Rav, host Rabbi Bassman sits down with special guest Reb Fitz Rabin to tackle one of the most complex ethical and communal questions in Chassidus: Is it permissible, and even necessary, for a Mashpia (spiritual mentor/guide) to be paid for his time and services?
This discussion dives deep into Jewish law (Halacha), Chassidic philosophy, and the practical realities of community life.
In this conversation, you will learn about:
The Halachic Principle: Examining the sources that warn against "profiting from the Torah" (ossur lehanos miketter yisgadda). Does spiritual mentorship fall under this category?
The Mashpia's Livelihood: How is a dedicated spiritual mentor, who spends hours guiding others, supposed to support his family? Is it the responsibility of the students or the community?
The Professional Dynamic: Does financial compensation impact the purity and effectiveness of the spiritual relationship between a Mashpia and a Chossid?
Community Infrastructure: Strategies for how the Chabad community can build sustainable models to ensure that spiritual leaders and mentors are properly cared for.
This is an essential conversation for Rabbis, Mashpi'im, students, and community members alike.
Guest: Reb Fitz Rabin Host: Rabbi Bassman
