The Battle of Pine Creek with Dr. Ryan Booth

<p>And we're back! Today we have a conversation with Dr. Ryan Booth about the 1858 Battle of Pine Creek. Famously, this battle was lost by then-Major Edward Steptoe, who was defeated by the Native American tribes on the Palouse. We discuss the state of relations between Native Americans, white settlers, and the US Army during the 1850s, the Battle of Pine Creek, and the ensuing campaign of retribution by Colonel George Wright.</p> <p>We also discuss how the history of this conflict was viewed in the decades following the Indian wars of the mid-19th century, and how those views have changed in the recent past. </p> <p>Mentioned:<br /> <a href= "https://search.neill-lib.org/client/en_US/default/search/results?qu=hang+them+all+donald+cutler&te=ILS" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Hang Them All: George Wright and the Plateau Indian War</em></a> by Donald Cutler</p> <p><a href="https://magazine.wsu.edu/2017/01/27/hang-them-all/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A good overview of </a><em><a href= "https://magazine.wsu.edu/2017/01/27/hang-them-all/" target= "_blank" rel="noopener">Hang Them All</a> </em>in Washington State magazine</p> <p>Also strongly recommended:</p> <p><a href= "https://search.neill-lib.org/client/en_US/default/search/detailnonmodal/ent:$002f$002fSD_ILS$002f0$002fSD_ILS:270732/one?qu=landscape+coyote+crane&te=ILS" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Landscape Traveled by Coyote and Crane : The World of the Schitsu'umsh</em></a></p> <p>The first two chapters of: <a href= "https://search.neill-lib.org/client/en_US/default/search/detailnonmodal/ent:$002f$002fSD_ILS$002f0$002fSD_ILS:137306/ada?qu=plowed+under&d=ent%3A%2F%2FSD_ILS%2F0%2FSD_ILS%3A137306%7EILS%7E0&te=ILS" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Plowed Under: Agriculture and Environment in the Palouse</em></a> The whole book is very good, but the first two chapters in particular deal with the geology and geography of the Palouse, and the history of Native American tribes in the area.</p> <p><em>Music by Scott Buckley – <a href= "http://www.scottbuckley.com.au/">www.scottbuckley.com.au</a> -  used under a CC BY 4.0 license.
