[…] August 1943 recaptures Belgorod and Kharkov and begins chasing Army Group South's forces towards the Dnieper River, which more or less flows through central Ukraine from Russia, flows south down and empties into the Black Sea. And this major river water barrier, the Germans hope will be able to hold in the fall and winter of 1943 to 1944. And they hope it'll give them a breathing space that the Kursk offensive proved unable to do. But the Germans are really on the back foot, disoriented, demoralized, rushing to get over the Dnieper River. That in some places, in late September 1943, the Red Army actually crosses before they do. […]
