Why timing is as important as the decision itself.</p><p> The current pressure on Joe Biden to quit the campaign post his disastrous debate calls into focus: why do we hold on too long to correct a bad decision?</p><p> The answer: Escalation of Commitment. Learn how escalation of commitment makes it difficult to change direction once we’ve started down a path.</p><p> Why so hard?</p><ol><li><b>Loss Aversion:</b><ul><li>People hate losing. When faced with the potential of recognizing a loss, they often double down in hopes of turning things around. </li></ul></li><li><b>Cognitive Dissonance:</b><ul><li>Admitting failure creates mental discomfort. To avoid this, individuals rationalize continuing their commitment to justify past decisions. </li></ul></li><li><b>Self-Justification:</b><ul><li>There’s a need to prove that previous decisions were correct. By persisting, one tries to validate the initial choice, even if it's clearly not working<b>.</b></li></ul></li><li><b>Social and Cultural Pressure:</b><ul><li>Peer pressure, cultural norms, or organizational culture can compel individuals to stick with a decision to avoid appearing inconsistent or weak.</li></ul></li><li><b>Overoptimism:</b><ul><li>The belief that the situation will improve with just a bit more effort, time, or investment can lead to further commitment</li></ul></li></ol>
