To ensure Gauvains loyalty to the Republic, they dispatch the steadfast Cimourdain, a former priest and Gauvains mentor, who harbors his own deep affection for the young officer. As the conflict escalates, Michele Flechard, a Breton peasant who has lost her home and husband to the chaos, desperately fights to keep her children alive amidst the surrounding bloodshed and devastation.
