Servants & Stewards - Mark 8

Associate Pastor Ron King continues our series on Mark.

What do you do when you realize your plans and God's plans aren't the same thing? Because that's exactly where Peter lands in Mark 8. He finally gets it right by calling Jesus the Messiah. And then Jesus tells him what that actually means: suffering, rejection, and death. Peter can't handle it, so he pulls Jesus aside and basically tells God he's wrong.

Jesus doesn't let that slide. "Get behind me, Satan," he says. Because sometimes the biggest obstacle to following Jesus isn't unbelief — it's holding onto our own good plans a little too tight.

Here's what it actually costs to follow Jesus, and why letting go of your version of the plan is the best trade you'll ever make.

Thank you for listening to this message from Northwest Hills Community Church in Corvallis, Oregon, on July 5, 2026, at 10:30am. Servants & Stewards - Mark 7

Worship Director Justin Jackson continues our series on Mark.

There's something uncomfortably familiar about the Pharisees. It's not the robes or the rituals, but their impulse to believe that if I just follow the right rules and look like I'm doing it right, then maybe I don't have to actually change anything on the inside.

Jesus calls this out directly in Mark 7. He's sitting down to a meal with his disciples when the religious leaders confront him — and his response is a harsh quote: This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

That's not just an ancient critique. We do this too! We make our own rules, impose them on others, and call it righteousness.

But the whole point of the law was never to be a ladder we climb. It was a mirror showing us we need help. And what Jesus offers on the other side of that realization isn't more rules. It's a new heart and actual freedom.

Thank you for listening to this message from Northwest Hills Community Church in Corvallis, Oregon, on June 28, 2026, at 10:30am.
