I'm one of those people dear Flannery wrote about when she said that the fiction writer has to retain a grain of stupidity of having to be told things twice. That's me. And I would happily let her pin a medal to my chest that said stupid on it because that's me. And yet this term pantser is exactly what Faulkner was talking about here with his observation about his writing process. He's talking about the joy that can be found, the excitement, the thrill, as well as the bewilderment that can happen when the story takes off on its own. […]
