Filmmaker Keri Pickett talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about “Uncle Roy” her fabulous documentary chronicling 9 decades of Roy Blakey’s personal and professional archives. Growing up Keri hardly knew her enigmatic uncle until she followed him to NYC to pursue photography where an unexpected friendship took shape. As their lives intertwined she discovered his groundbreaking legacy of celebrity and gay photos. When Roy’s health declined Keri cared for him while preserving the stories he kept so carefully guarded. “Uncle Roy” follows the extraordinary life of globe-traveling-skater turned photographer Roy Blakey born in Oklahoma in 1930 dreaming of performing on ice. This love of figure skating led Roy to a career in theatrical skating, performing globally with Holiday on Ice. He then began collecting figure skating programs and photographs, a collection that expanded over his lifetime to 44,000 items including posters, costumes and more. After his professional skating career Blakey became a photographer in NYC capturing iconic figures including LGBTQ icons while his work in male nudes pushed boundaries in art and publishing. Blakey’s book “HE” (1972) is considered a forefather of gay photography with his portraits of a generation largely lost to AIDS. “Uncle Roy” is currently playing the film festival circuit with upcoming screening including Reel Q the Pittsburgh LGBT Film Festival on October 9th, NewFest: 38th Annual New York LGBTQ Film Festival on October 18th, QDoc October 24th in Portland, OR, SCAD Savannah Film Festival October 30th and Indie Memphis Film Festival on November 8th. We talked to Keri about what she hopes to accomplish with her documentary and her spin on surviving these challenging times.
Keri Pickett is an award-winning artist, producer, director and cinematographer. Pickett’s documentary films FINDING HER BEAT (2022), FIRST DAUGHTER AND THE BLACK SNAKE (2017) and THE FABULOUS ICE AGE (2013) have won multiple awards and screened at festivals around the world breaking records in attendance and streamed on Netflix. An acclaimed photographer Pickett has published multiple photography books with photographs displayed in international and national museums and have appeared in Life, Time, People, Stern and Geo magazines. Keri has been awarded fellowships from the Bush Foundation, McKnight, Jerome and Target Foundations and the National Endowment for the Arts. Pickett was awarded the 2018 McKnight Filmmaking Fellowship.

Arabella (Bella) Barkow is an experienced event producer with a longstanding focus on fostering inclusive, welcoming spaces and experiences for the LGBTQ community. Rose Garcia is the real-life inspiration behind the iconic character “Papi” on the original scripted series The L Word. When creator Ilene Chaiken expanded the franchise with the docuseries The Real L Word Garcia joined the cast. Beyond her television presence Rose is a dedicated businesswoman, entrepreneur and advocate. Garcia steps into this new exciting chapter as co-owner of The Dinah alongside Barkow under their newly formed BellaRose Productions.

Filmmakers Talk Story Telling Part #2
In the conclusion of our 2 part series Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ talks to filmmakers at the 28th Provincetown International Film Festival (PIFF). First we talked with multi-award-winning director, producer and executive producer Marc Smolowitz who has been significantly involved with 50+ successful independent films. Marc had two films at PIFF this year that couldn’t be more different. First was “Lady Champagne” a bold, irreverent comedy directed by D’Arcy Drollinger. This feature film embraces camp, absurdity and unapologetic humor, drawing comparisons to classic spoof comedies. His second film was the documentary “Uncle Roy” tracing the remarkable life skater and photographer Roy Blakey through the eyes of his niece. Next we chatted with filmmaker Keri Pickett who directed “Uncle Roy” that chronicles nine decades of Roy Blakey’s personal and professional archives. Growing up Keri barely knew her enigmatic uncle until she followed him to New York to pursue photography where an unexpected friendship took shape. As their lives intertwine she discovers his groundbreaking 1972 book about his legacy as a pioneer of gay photography. When Roy’s health declines Keri cares for him while preserving the stories he kept so carefully guarded.
Then we chatted with directors Megan Rico and Kade Atwood about their film “Edie Arnold is a Loser” also written by Rico. The award-winning feature film tells the story of a timid dork Edie accidentally taking the spotlight when she starts a punk band becoming an icon to the rest of the losers at her all-girls Catholic school. Megan Rico and Kade Atwood have created a vivid, fresh and fun musical ode to weirdos and outsiders. Lead actress Adi Madden Cabrera delivers a terrific performance in a wonderfully unique coming-of-age film that is as full of heart as it is of laughs. “Edie Arnold is a Loser” won Best Film at the Seattle International Film Festival. We concluded our coverage with “100-Years of Schooner Hindu” a Provincetown legacy directed by Angela McNearney about the sailing schooner Hindu which has been shaped by wind, water and mariners devoted to her for more than 100 years.
