およそ2100年という、悠久の歴史を誇る日吉大社は、 全国に3800社以上ある日吉・日枝・山王神社の総本宮です。 日吉大社には「東本宮」と「西本宮」という２つのお社があります。 東本宮には、古くからこの地を護ってきた、山の地主の神様「大山咋神」が祀られ、西本宮には、「大津宮」遷都の際に、国を護る神として奈良から勧請された「大己貴神」が祀られています。 永い歴史のなかで、日吉大社は「延暦寺」の「守護神」となり、また、「平安京」が造られた際には、都の鬼門を護る存在ともなって、人々の信仰を集めてきました。 日吉大社で毎年春に開催されるのが「山王祭」です。厳かな神事から、激しく勇ましい神事まで、さまざまな表情を持つまつりは、３月からおよそ１か月半に渡って行われます。
