Quarto racconto di Raymond Carver, Il Treno. Questo treno di Carver è un treno particolare, perché non nasce da zero. Nasce da un prestito, da un furto gentile: Carver prende in prestito il finale di un racconto di John Cheever, "Il diavolo delle 5 e 48", e da lì riparte, esattamente da dove Cheever si era fermato. C’è una donna che si chiama Miss Dent. Poco prima, quella sera, ha fatto qualcosa che le pesa ancora addosso, un conto in sospeso con un uomo che l'aveva ferita, e che lei ha chiuso a modo suo, con una rivoltella e la faccia di lui spinta nella polvere. Ora è lì, sul marciapiede, con quel peso ancora dentro. Non è sola. Ci sono altri due, un uomo e una donna, una coppia, forse, o forse no. Anche loro aspettano. Anche loro, si intuisce, portano qualcosa che non dicono ad alta voce. Tre persone, un'attesa, un treno quasi vuoto che li porterà via da lì. E in mezzo, come sempre in Carver. Una serata apparentemente ordinaria, fatta di conversazioni, piccoli gesti e imbarazzi quasi impercettibili.
