About Prayers that Bring Us Home

[To receive the daily Psalm rendering, notes, and encouragement by email, sign up through the link at the top of this page.] The Prayers That Bring Us Home is a daily journey through the Psalms, the prayer book of the Bible. Together, Ramona, Paula, Gaye, and John pray these ancient songs as a spiritual vocabulary for healing, resilience, lament, trust, and praise. The Psalms were prayed and carried by God’s people through worship, suffering, exile, return, and renewal, becoming a sacred meeting place where wounded communities bring their whole lives into the presence of God. These are the prayers Jesus knew, prayed, embodied, and gave to us as a way of praying together. As we pray them with him, we are formed into our true identity as children of God. From San Antonio Mennonite Church, a joyful community seeking to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God in our Southtown neighborhood.

Psalm 51: Here Is My Broken Heart

What do we bring to God when sorry cannot undo the harm? After Psalm 50 calls God’s people into truthful worship, Psalm 51 gives David a prayer of confession. His cry for mercy cannot erase Bathsheba or Uriah, and a beautiful sacrifice cannot purchase his way around the truth. Yet God will not despise a broken heart. John, Ramona, and Paula pray with Jesus for a clean heart, the courage to seek repair, and the Spirit’s assurance that we can call “Abba” before we are mended.

Psalm 50: Call to Me in a Day of Trouble

What can we offer a God who needs nothing from us? Psalm 50 brings God’s people before a searching voice. God does not need their animals, and beautiful worship cannot cover theft, betrayal, or deceit. But at the center comes an invitation: “Call to Me in a day of trouble. I will pull you out.” John, Ramona, and Paula pray this Psalm with Jesus, releasing our bargains and self-rescue schemes, telling the truth about harm, and receiving the freedom to call “Abba” before we have found our own way out.

Psalm 49: Who Can Buy Back a Life?

What can we reach for when even our best resources cannot keep someone we love from death? Psalm 49 speaks to rich and poor together. Wealth can provide food, shelter, and care, but it cannot Buy Back a life from Sheol. John, Ramona, and Paula pray the Psalm’s unsettling image of death as a shepherd and its daring turn: “But God will Buy Back my Being ... for God will take me in.” Praying with Jesus, we can tell the truth about mortality, ask for the care we need today, and entrust the people we love to God’s hold.
