AI cracked an Erdős math problem. Now experts want guardrails

Researchers at OpenAI gave an AI model Erdős’ conjecture and walked away. When they returned, they discovered a breakthrough: The model had disproved the conjecture in a mathematical proof posted May 20 on OpenAI.com.

“It’s a beautiful piece of mathematics that has been discovered,” says Melanie Matchett Wood of Harvard University, who contributed remarks to an accompanying paper in which outside experts reviewed the AI’s result. The discovery bolsters hopes that AI can contribute to scientific understanding.

But the AI proof relied on perseverance rather than creative insight and has raised concerns about how mathematics will be done going forward. On June 2 a group of experts published a declaration calling for tight guardrails around AI in mathematical research. As of June 5, the declaration has 1,590 signatures.

Warning as AI clones voices and law falls behind

People in the UK could have their voice or face cloned using artificial intelligence without their knowledge and current laws may not be strong enough to stop it, experts have warned.

Rapid advances in AI mean realistic digital copies can now be created from short audio or video clips, raising concerns about identity misuse, scams and loss of control.

Media lawyer Dr Mathilde Pavis, said UK legislation was now "unfit for purpose" because it was written before this technology existed.

"The law comes close, but it doesn't fully protect your voice, your face or your identity," she said.

She added other countries including France, Italy, the Netherlands and Denmark have "effective laws" that protect personality rights.

A Bristol voice-over artist, Faye Dicker, said she was in "disbelief" after discovering her voice had been cloned, external and sold online without her consent.

Dicker said her voice had been downloaded on US-based AI firm Fish Audio more than 900 times.

She said: "I have no idea who has used my voice, how they have used it and what they have recorded me saying," she said.

Fish Audio said it takes "the protection of recognisable public voices seriously" and removed the content.

Physical disc production ending in January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles

As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.

This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.

We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support.
