„Das ist bestimmt nur Placebo.“ – Diesen Satz haben wir alle schon einmal gehört oder sogar benutzt. Doch wird man damit einem Effekt gerecht, der nicht nur einen wesentlichen Anteil der Wirkung von Medikamenten ausmacht, sondern auch ganz unmerklich unseren Alltag durchdringt? Gemeinsam mit dem Medienwissenschaftler Martin Andree widmen wir uns in dieser Folge dem Placeboeffekt in all seinen Facetten. Wir sprechen über Placebos, Nocebos, Psychosomatik, Homöopathie, Medienwirkung, Placebo-Operationen, Marketing, Sport und Dr. Google. Außerdem klären wir, warum die Geschichte der Medizin eigentlich eine Geschichte des Placebos ist, warum Musik und Ärzt:innen wie Drogen wirken, ob man an einem Nocebo sterben kann und warum Beipackzettel einen Beipackzettel brauchen.

Antidepressiva gelten in Zeiten steigender Depressionsraten und fehlender Therapieplätze für viele als Mittel der Wahl. Heute werden sie rund achtmal häufiger verschrieben als noch in den 1990er-Jahren. Gleichzeitig ist ihre Wirksamkeit seit Jahren Gegenstand kontroverser Debatten. Besonders seit 2008, als Irving Kirsch und sein Team in einer Metaanalyse unveröffentlichte und veröffentlichte Studien der US-amerikanischen Arzneimittelbehörde FDA auswerteten. Ihr Ergebnis: Antidepressiva wirken — wenn überhaupt — nur bei sehr schweren Depressionen stärker als ein Placebo. Sowohl in der klinischen Praxis als auch in der Forschung herrscht bis heute Uneinigkeit: Sind Antidepressiva Fluch oder Segen? Viele Betroffene profitieren kaum oder gar nicht von der Einnahme, manche kämpfen mit starken Nebenwirkungen, andere haben große Schwierigkeiten beim Absetzen. Zu Gast ist Prof. Dr. Nils Kroemer. Er ist Professor für Medizinische Psychologie an der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, leitet eine Arbeitsgruppe im Bereich Translationale Psychiatrie an der Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen und das NeuroMADLAB. Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt: die neurowissenschaftlichen Grundlagen von Motivation, Handlungen und Verlangen. Er untersucht, welche Rolle Motivation beziehungsweise Antriebslosigkeit im Rahmen einer Depression spielt und inwiefern sich Motivation durch körpereigene Mechanismen wiederherstellen lässt – um depressive Symptome lindern zu können. Im Gespräch erklärt er außerdem, wie Antidepressiva entwickelt wurden, wie sie wirken und warum er sie trotz aller Kritik für einen wichtigen Baustein in der Behandlung von Depressionen hält.
