When Ideals Meet In Reality...! | "Saathi" by Jaswant Singh Kanwal
Hello everyone!
Today, I am sharing a deeply moving and thought-provoking story titled "Saathi" (The Companion), written by one of the pillars of Punjabi literature, Jaswant Singh Kanwal.
This isn't just a love story; it is a reflection of human nature, social responsibility, and the complex journey of two souls who meet under the most unexpected circumstances.
The Journey of the Story: The narrative follows Jagdeep, a teacher whose journey to Delhi is interrupted by a heated protest at the Jalandhar bus stand. Amidst the chaos and a brutal police lathi charge, she witnesses the raw courage of a young man named Harpreet. Her act of kindness—taking him to the hospital—blossoms into a relationship built on mutual respect and intellectual growth.
Harpreet becomes her guide, encouraging her to pursue education further. But as they move forward in life, something changes. A gap begins to form—a drift that neither can fully explain but both can deeply feel.
Why does a bond forged in fire begin to fade in the calm? What happens when the person you admired for their ideals pretends to be a stranger? To find out the poignant conclusion of Jagdeep and Harpreet’s journey, I invite you to listen to the full narration.

Status! (ਸਟੇਟਸ!): Kamal Sekhon | Dr. Ruminder | Punjabi Short Story
Status! (ਸਟੇਟਸ!): Kamal Sekhon |
Today, I am sharing a deeply reflective short story titled "Status" (ਸਟੇਟਸ), written by the talented Kamal Sekhon. This story is a mirror to our modern society, where we often get caught between the life we live and the image we try to project.
The Story at a Glance: The protagonist of our story lives a life of luxury and leisure. As the wife of a dedicated police officer and the daughter-in-law of a household rooted in tradition, she often finds herself drifting into memories of her vibrant university days. When she reconnects with her old circle of friends on Facebook, she is thrilled—but also hesitant.
She fears that her "traditional" and "orthodox" in-laws might not fit the high-society image she wants to maintain in front of her modern friends. She tries to keep these two worlds apart, only to be met with a revelation that changes her entire perspective on what "status" really means.
Why you should watch this:1. The Social Media Trap: A look at how we curate our lives for others to see.2. Identity & Belonging: The struggle of a woman trying to find her place between the past and the present.3. The Value of Roots: A beautiful reminder that our greatest "status" often lies in the legacy of our elders.
In a world obsessed with digital filters and social standing, Kamal Sekhon’s writing reminds us of the substance that lies beneath the surface. I hope my narration brings these emotions to life for you.

Kachi Mitti! (ਕੱਚੀ ਮਿੱਟੀ!)- Veena Verma | Dr. Ruminder | Punjabi Short Story
Mitti! (ਕੱਚੀ ਮਿੱਟੀ!)- Veena Verma |
In today’s episode, I bring to you a powerful and thought-provoking narration of the Punjabi short story "Kachi Mitti" (ਕੱਚੀ ਮਿੱਟੀ), authored by the legendary Veena Verma.
Veena Verma is known for pulling back the curtain on the "glamorous" life of the West, and this story is perhaps one of her most haunting works. It follows the journey of Preety, an international student who travels from rural Punjab to the UK with high hopes and her family's honor on her shoulders.
However, the reality of high rents, tuition fees, and lack of jobs pushes her into a dark world of exploitation and survival. Through Preety’s character, the story explores the heartbreaking compromises many young girls make just to meet ends. The climax—a choice between a mother’s love and the desperate need for legal status—serves as a powerful symbolic representation of the "settlement" dream.
Key Themes:The psychological toll of the migration struggle. The reality of exploitation faced by Punjabi students abroad.A deep literary analysis of Veena Verma’s characters.
I have narrated this story to shed light on the hardships that are often kept hidden from our families back home. I hope this narration makes us reflect on the true cost of settling abroad.
