Does Whatever a Spider Can: The Story of the Spiderman Musical

Just like the comic book itself, the musical follows the rise and fall of what was supposed to redefine the industry as we know it. We follow four people who feel like they out to change the world. Make a show about a character, Spider-Man, that is unlike any other. This is not simply a movie you can watch on screen. Rather, this is a play you can watch in real time. A show where Spider-Man is right in front of your face, flying around and swinging. The idea being unlike anything you’ve ever seen. But it comes with a cost, a heavy and expensive cost. The show costs over $40 million. The show becomes plagued with obstacles, a dead producer, money, and poor reviews. In many ways, Spider-Man is a comedic tragedy. A tale of a once great idea gone sour. A fable about the dangers of unchecked ego and what happens when too much imagination gets out of hand.

This piece was produced by Nolan Cleary.
