TakeRoot 2025
<p>De 27e editie van het grootste Americana-festival van Nederland zit er weer op. TakeRoot in de Oosterpoort te Groningen was op 1 november even ‘little USA’ met fantastische country, blues, folk en indiepop. Ruim 24 acts, bestaande uit solisten, duo’s, trio’s en grotere ensembles, verdeeld over zes podia, maakten hun opwachting. Onder hen Patterson Hood, Courtney Marie Andrews, Chuck Prophet, Brandy Clark, Lilli Hiatt, Joachim Cooder en Frazey Ford. RadioAmericanaNL deed verslag en dat is hier te beluisteren. Conversation with Early James
<p>TakeRoot 2025 is het grootste Amerikaanse rootsfestival van Nederland. Dit jaar voor de 27e keer. En Radio Americana was erbij, met een studiobus waarin enkele optredende artiesten te gast waren. Zo ook Early James. Recensenten zeggen over zijn nieuwste album ‘Medium Raw’ dat het beter ‘Raw’ had kunnen heten want het schuurt heerlijk aan alle kanten. Het geluid ligt ergens tussen Howlin’ Wolf en de Black Keys. Meeslepend is nog de beste term die zijn optreden op TakeRoot kenmerkte. Early James is nog jong (32) en toch gegrepen door vooroorlogse wortels uit de diepe zwarte Delta van de USA. In Groningen spraken we hem na binnenkomst als hij er een autorit vanuit Parijs van een dag op heeft zitten waar hij in een theatertje op Montmartre had opgetreden. We praten over zijn voorbeelden: Dan Auerbach, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, Nirvana, James Taylor, Captain Beefheart en natuurlijk Howlin’ Wolf. <br><br><br></p>

Conversation with Courtney Marie Andrews
<p>De uit Arizona afkomstige Courtney Marie Andrews opende het programma van TakeRoot 2025 in de Kleine Zaal en we waren meteen verkocht. Haar fragiele gestalte, de zuivere zang, soms met een onvervalste country-snik, maar ook de experimentele gitaarklanken van haar partner Jerry Bernhardt maakten indruk. Lee Hazlewood (?) en Neil Young zijn haar inspiratiebronnen. Vergeleken worden met Emmylou Harris en Linda Ronstadt vindt ze ‘so so’. Ze timmert al heel wat jaren aan de weg en is veel te zien op Europese podia. Vaak solo, nu dus met bijzonder gitaarwerk van haar compagnon en producer. We volgen haar al vanaf 2018 toen ‘May your kindness remain’ net uit was. Daarna ‘Old Flowers’ en vervolgens het wonderschone ‘Loose future’. Binnenkort verschijnt ‘Valentine’ waarvan Courtney nummers speelde. Een ‘donkere’ plaat zoals ze zelf zegt, al is ze natuurlijk nooit een feestnummer geweest. Liefdesverdriet, eenzaamheid en melancholie zijn thema’s die wel aan haar besteed zijn. En dat hoor je. Ook in haar gedichten overigens. De nieuwe bundel ‘Love is a Dog That Bites When It’s Scared’ getuigt daarvan.</p>
