"INTERRUPTIONS" WE INSIST/IT COULD HAVE BEEN MY SON

In BAM, The Black Arts Movement, the idea of the ASE, or the vital force, is released through the music, and vocalizations or utterances; these elements permeate the poetry and music of black artists and poets of the 1960's.  The civil rights movement was gathering momentum by the end of the 1960's. But it seemed to be still starting and stopping. Desegregation began with the sit-in movement at a Woolworth's lunch counter in Greensboro, NC. July 25, 1960.  Dr. King was arrested for trespassing along with 51 other followers at Rich's restaurant in Atlanta, an all white establishment. Early in 1961, the Freedom Fighters and the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee met for the first time. These activities took place on April 15, 1961. Max Roach was about to create the most overt political jazz recording made up to that date. He brought in his quintet and several other guest artists. The "Freedom Now Suite" was recorded at the Nola studios in New York. (McMichael 1998) There is a relationship between The Black Arts Movement and the direction that experimentation occurred in the jazz community in the 1960's. There were innovative uses of vocalizations, sounds, meanings that were interpretative. It was through poetry and music. These were the sites where the artist began to talk back to the power structure. There was not just one single cohesive philosophy regarding the Black Arts Movement and the music of that era. We are transforming through crisis and interrupting the status quo, globally. We remain in-between the past, the present and the future. We are transfixed by our own ability to adapt and change and create a new world in this in-between space.

RAIN was born and raised in Chicago, and is an artist working across Poetics. In her multimedia work, whether music or visual art, the intersection of social justice and spirituality is a thread that runs through all the disciplines of  her work. As a teaching artist with students, from the classroom to the stage at the Art Institute of Chicago, she weaves a pedagogy with the same threads of spirituality and social justice. Her paintings, prints and drawings going back over 35+ years represent an artistic practice rich in ideas, content, creativity and authenticity. RAIN is currently a founding member of the art collective: <a href="http://motherartrevisited.com/" target="_blank">MOTHER ART: REVISITED</a> Educated in the Arts at University of California, Berkeley. RAIN holds two degrees from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a Master’s in Art Education, and a Master of Fine Arts. She has served as a teaching artist for the Chicago Public Schools for 22 years, and as adjunct faculty in Art Education at The School of the Art institute of Chicago. "AMERICAN MAN"  is on the album "Six Days at the Mouse House" iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud, CD Baby recorded in Portland Oregon  at the studio of Modest Mouse. The poem, "From The Studio" was written at the beginning of the pandemic we are now facing, when schools first closed and the new reality became homeschooling around the world.  As a retired teacher I found the concept interesting and exciting to see how parental involvement may  be helpful for some children's' learning needs, and how quickly teachers students and parents adapted to this new teaching paradigm.
