[…] This is quite a descent in the family standard of living, isn't it, Katja? It is indeed, but I think an even harsher blow came in another way to hit the family, even harsher than this kind of loss of status. because the Schirach's first son, that's Baldur von Schirach's older brother, Karl, who was named after his father and grandfather, fell into rather deep despair when his hopes of becoming an army officer were crushed as Germany lost the war and then had to demilitarize as part of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. So Karl was just 19 years old when this particular blow hit him in October 1919, that he couldn't become an officer, and so he took his own life. […]
