Roberta's Robbinsdale
Episode 40: Crystal Boyd presents Roberta Lee Scoville’s 1976 history of Robbinsdale tracing the community's growth from Dakota homeland and early farming settlement through the arrival of the railroad, Andrew B. Robbins, the streetcar, and the village's incorporation. Along the way, it highlights colorful stories about early residents, businesses, schools, fires, local ordinances, and everyday life, illustrating how Robbinsdale evolved into a thriving suburban community while preserving memories of its pioneering families. The episode concludes by reflecting on the challenges facing Robbinsdale in the 1970s and encourages listeners to appreciate and preserve the city's history as it looks toward the future. Roberta wrote this for a class at the Minneapolis Business College. She got an A+!

Saloons, Sundays and Someplace Else
Episode 39: In the early 1900s, strict Sunday closing laws in Minneapolis transformed Robbinsdale into a rowdy, saloon-packed haven for thirsty crowds until political crackdowns forced the community to vote itself dry. The return of alcohol after prohibition brought a lucrative municipal liquor store monopoly and restrictive 3.2% beer laws that kept private bar owners strictly handcuffed. This bizarre legal landscape ultimately doomed "Someplace Else"—a swanky, secret-entrance nightclub that couldn't survive without selling setups, forcing it to pivot into a high-energy teen hangout.

Splish Splash Nash
Episode 38:The Nash family helped shape Robbinsdale for nearly a century, leaving their mark on farming, business, politics, public service, and recreation. Civil War veteran J. Elijah Nash became a dairy farmer, hardware merchant, and two-time Socialist candidate for governor. His son George built a thriving hardware and plumbing business, served as fire chief, and a flyer of weather flags above West Broadway. Floyd Nash transformed Crystal Lake into a bustling summer destination with Crystal Baths, drawing visitors from across the Twin Cities. As the family farm gave way to neighborhoods and the resort became parkland, the Nash legacy became woven into the fabric of Robbinsdale. It's a story of big ideas, hard work, and a family whose influence can still be seen along the shores of Crystal Lake today.
