Episdode 5: Frank Teaches History!

Probably one of my favorite episodes so far, really interesting and powerful...

Thank you all for listening to this episode. Frank blew me away in terms of content and knowledge. PLEASE listen and educate yourselves.

follow frank on Twitter @FKalisik

correction to the episode:

While some Tejanos did side with the slaveholding states, others sided with the Union, holding on to the notion that slavery was immoral, or they chose not to support a government who advocated for it, as Mexico had abolished slavery before Texas became independent. What happens, though, is that as white Americans moved westward into Texas, the population who was already there had to make the choice to assimilate in White America or retain their heritage. Those who chose the latter were often denied rights, castigated as "others" and in some instances forced back into Mexico due to threats. The NPS has a decent summary.

https://www.nps.gov/articles/hispanics-and-the-civil-war.htm

Slave Narratives worth a read:

https://emke.uwm.edu/entry/joshua-glover/

https://www.elizabethfreemancenter.org/who-we-are/elizabeth-freeman/

https://www.encyclopediavirginia.org/Brown_Henry_Box_ca_1815

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/02/12/magazine/1619-project-slave-auction-sites.html

Frank also wrote and narrated a podcast called

"The Healthiest City: Milwaukee and its Pandemics" and you can find it on Google Podcasts of Spotify.
