Da ihn die resolute Pfarr-Haushälterin Maria (Susi Banzhaf) daraufhin irrtümlich für den erwarteten neuen Pfarrer hält, wird der ungetaufte Kriminelle ungewollt zum geistlichen Vorstand der Kleinstadt-Gemeinde Läuterberg. Dabei agiert Schäfer durchaus gekonnt und fühlt sich schnell wohl in seiner neuen Rolle des Seelentrösters, der abseits des Großstadt-Trubels untertauchen und seine kriminellen Aktivitäten vorerst einstellen kann. Und wenn seine mahnenden Worte mal nicht ausreichen, hilft er auch gelegentlich mit unorthodoxen Taten nach, die dann seine wahre Identität durchblitzen lassen. Besonders riskant für „Sankt Maik“ ist jedoch Kirchenchorleiterin Eva Hellwarth (Bettina Burchard), in die sich der falsche Pfarrer verliebt.
