This podcast is dedicated to Frazden (2007 - 2024). As this podcast is a work of fiction, everything herein is imaginary with only a dash of dangling facts. Your host, Aaranya Susipetonen, is an ex-MeriPelle who was a student of DJ Bohm and Newt Scamander. She has a doctorate in Magizoology and has written a textbook on Thestrals and Occamies. She is currently in Sodankylä (Lapland) to write her second textbook (the title of this podcast). Note that Aaranya is a susi, so expect her to howl (ahem croak) often.

Season finale: A compilation of the story so far (1895 to 2024)

As Letty is working on her audiobook on the chosen rock of the Northern Canadian Cordillera, she is ending this season with a compilation of the story so far.

The episode begins with Aaranya Susipetonen questioning Prof. Scamander about misdirecting her research on Occamies and Thestrals. An explanation ensues about Copernicus’ prediction related to the chief healer and the four founders of the Frazden School of Boundless Joy.

The story flows back and forth in time. From the first scene in Jan 2024, we move to Jul 1895, Aug 1965, and Jan 1976 before coming back to Mar 2024 and finally ending with a scene in Dec 1997.

The last scene is a conversation between Jalo Monivilja, a renowned geologist from Newfoundland and Labrador, and Aaranya Susipetonen, our magizoologist from Alberta.

You will hear your host croak a few lines of Kuinka Voit during the course of this episode. The chosen rock and the East Pond gneiss

This is part III of the tale of two prehistoric oceans and the chosen rock. Prof. Scamander’s 101st birthday is in less than two months, and Aaranya Susipetonen has not yet solved his puzzle about the East Pond gneiss.

She fears that she might have to destroy the clue that Prof. Scamander found 78 years ago. So, Jalo Monivilja, an expert on eclogites and a renowned geologist from Newfoundland and Labrador, is helping her make the connection.

Aaranya is juggling three conflicting priorities: Her figure skating practice in preparation for the 1998 Winter Olympics, her final assignment at Rougemont (Québec) to secure her research position in the Yukon, and the rescue attempt to release Prof. Scamander's pet occamy, Ouroboros, from the muggle brain.

She cannot chase all three at the same time, so which one will she let go?

As Aaranya is on a field trip with Jalo to Chibougamau (Québec), she is not reading any research papers in this episode.

However, one abstract published in 1990 makes its way because of a conversation between Prof. Scamander and Aaranya many moons ago.

Some papers mentioned in this episode are as follows:

Eclogite with biotite porphyroblasts—Which conditions are responsible for their formation? The chosen rock and the mountain that moves: Unfolding our second SARtastic beast

This is part II of the tale of two prehistoric oceans and the chosen rock. Aaranya has already found three eclogite sites, so she needs to leave Yukon's Quiet Lake study area and return to the Frazden school in Lapland.

She is reviewing some research papers and a 1969 Whitehorse Star article to prepare a draft about the second SARtastic beast. This is an unwieldly beast because it manifests as an unfathomable problem as well as an ongoing field solution. It belongs to the MeriMies and MeriMetso houses, which makes its provenance as difficult to nail as the protolith of the eclogites that Aaranya is learning about.

From the last episode, we know that Paracelsus switched a key ingredient of the resurrection stone before handing over the clues about the deathly hallows to his friend, the founder of the Leaky Cauldron.

Aaranya figured out this switch in the last episode, but she cannot seem to understand why she must review the geology of the Frank Slide in southern Alberta when her study site is in the Yukon. What can the permanent scatterers in SAR interferometry reveal about the eclogite protolith?

Aaranya is thinking about her best friend of 16 years, whom she last saw at the Mission Ridge Animal Hospital in Alberta. She is listening to her favorite singer-songwriter (Kate Wolf) to ease the pain and continue with her research on the second SARtastic beast.

Aaranya is referring to the following resources:

Geology of Quiet Lake and Finlayson Lake map areas (Tempelman-Kluit, 2012)

Fires Ravage The Yukon - Faro Gone, Maybe Pelly (Whitehorse Star, 1969)

Frank Slide: One of Canada’s Largest Modern Rockslides (Alberta Energy Regulator)

An excerpt in French about the Frank Slide on page 438 (chapter 17) from the book Notions de géologie (4 ed.) by Bruno Landry

Monitoring landslides and volcanic deformation from InSAR techniques (Singhroy, Ohkura, Molch, and Couture, 2004)

Characterizing and monitoring rockslides from SAR techniques (Singhroy and Molch, 2004)

Frank Slide a century later: The Turtle Mountain Monitoring Project (2005)

Mapping Millimetre-Scale Ground Deformation over Frank Slide, Turtle Mountain, Alberta Using Spaceborne InSAR Technology (Mei, Poncos, and Froese, 2008)

Note: This is a work of fiction, so everything herein is imaginary with some dangling facts.
