Mixing Mediums Part 2: Movie Musicals

In this episode we continue our chat about mixing mediums. We discuss Mary Poppins, Newsies, The Greatest Showman, La La Land, and what we think works, doesn't work, and surmise what a staged version of each show would look like (if applicable). Be sure to follow us on Instagram @sceneophilepodcast and let us know which of these movie musicals you like best.

Happy Listening!

H & O

Sound Effects:

- Circus Music - Classic (VidTrax Music) Music provided by VidTrax Music https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4nk...

- Title: The Jazz Piano, Music: www.bensound.com, Download: https://goo.gl/JJPpkT

Mixing Mediums Part 1: Musicals that Became Movies.

In this episode we talk about musicals that later became movies and suggest some reasons for why these adaptations sometimes work and sometimes do not. We chat about In the Heights (2021), Cats (2019), and The Sound of Music (1965) among others. We post new episodes biweekly on Fridays.

We also want to acknowledge two things. First, that we briefly touch on the history of racism in theatre and film and we want to encourage everyone listening to make sure you learn about that history. We believe it’s an important step in dismantling the barriers and challenges Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour have faced and continue to face in the theatre and film industries.

Second, that we would like to acknowledge the land on which we gather. Olivia is situated on, (taken from the Region of Peel land acknowledgement) "the Treaty Lands and Territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit. For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples inhabited and cared for this land, and continue to do so today. In particular I acknowledge the territory of the Anishinabek, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Ojibway/Chippewa peoples; the land that is home to the Metis; and most recently, the territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation who are direct descendants of the Mississaugas of the Credit." Olivia is grateful to have the opportunity to work and live in this territory. Heather respectfully acknowledges (taken from the City of Vaughan Aboriginal Territorial Acknowledgement) she is "situated on traditional territories and treaty lands in particular the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation as well as the Anishinaabeg of the Williams Treaty First Nation, the Huron-Wendat, and the Métis Nation. As representatives of the people of the City of Vaughan, Heather is grateful to have the opportunity to work and live in this territory. We encourage all our listeners to research which lands you are situated on and learn about the history behind colonial settlers and Indigenous peoples.

We have posted some resources on both topics we have found helpful in our learnings as a place to start on our Instagram @sceneophilepodcast however, this list is not exhaustive by any means.

Happy Listening!

H & O
