COVID-19 Pt 2 - Uncovering Malaysia's Racism: The Plight of Hundreds of Rohingya Refugees

Our second part of the COVID-19 series comes after a break caused by, well, all things COVID-19. In our sixth episode for this season, we will be going back to April 2020 when first waves of the pandemic had been making the round in different countries. Malaysia being one of them. In the first few months of the pandemic, the Malaysian government underwent a purge of undocumented immigrants and refugees who have been living in squalid conditions for decades. Hundreds of migrant workers were rounded up en masse then detained, all of which happening unimpeded during a spike in infection clusters in the country. We sat down with Hasnah Hussin, a community organizer and research assistant with a local human rights NGO, Tenaganita. As a daughter of a Rohingya refugee born and raised in Malaysia, she’s stateless, a reality for hundreds of thousands of refugees and asylum seekers facing an escalation of state repression.

COVID-19 Pt 1: China- Debunking Viral Myths

Welcome to the first part of our two (maybe more) part series on COVID-19, the novel coronavirus that has turned lives upside down. Including our own. Before one of our hosts was told to leave their dorm in the US and the other was quarantined in Malaysia. we had sat down to record what we hoped had been the most extreme statistics of the then epidemic. In only a month, the numbers have more than doubled globally. The effect of COVID-19 on people and communities, especially vulnerable ones, is just being realised which is why it is important to recognise fake news about the pandemic when you see it. Many of the myths discussed in the episode are still being circulated and believed today. Stay home and stay safe!
