Dari guru tidak tetap sampai sipir penjara. Perkenalannya dengan Kakushun, seorang pedagang Taiwan yang memiliki cabang di luar negeri, mendorongnya menjadi pedagang. Pada 1902, dia mandiri dengan membuka toko kelontong di Taipei.
