DRIVING THROUGH THE FOG

Have you ever felt like your life was foggy? Do you know what I mean? Like it was hard to think straight, like you just weren’t functioning at your highest capacity? You were tired - mentally and physically. It could have been a late night, or a bunch of late nights, or maybe you just have a lot going on right now, life is hard right now, and it’s wearing you down. All of us go through it. Sometimes life just gets that way. Overwhelming. It gets foggy - difficult to think clearly and make good decisions. And, as much as we want to, We can’t always keep going, as if everything is normal. Sometimes we have to stop. And that’s okay.

We live in a world dictated by speed, by progress, by success, by resilience. It’s hard to stop, for fear of falling behind. Fear of missed opportunity. Fear of failure. Fear of admitting that we are vulnerable and fragile. But friend, the worst thing we can do for ourselves and for others, is pretend. When life gets foggy, we can’t go on pretending that it isn’t. We have to face it. Do not be afraid.

Facing our problems is hard, because when we do we have to slow down and slowing down feels detrimental to progress and our world today is dictated by speed, progress and results. How will we get the results we want, the results we have convinced ourselves that we need, if we slow down. We will miss our opportunity - Missed opportunity is the pathway to regret. I had an event coming up. I did all of the prep work. I was ready and I was already planning what would happen after the event. And you know where this is going, it fell through. I had to cancel it. I was so bummed. The event was such a great opportunity. What I was planning for after the event, was such a great opportunity, but it didn’t happen. Before I headed home, I got a call from my wife. She told me that she was feeling sick and desperately needed help with the kids. She needed me home as soon as possible. The event fell through. It felt like a missed opportunity, but in reality, it was making way for a new opportunity. I got to go home early, spend the evening with my kids, and allow my wife to go to bed early. An opportunity lost, was a greater opportunity gained.

I believe that for you too, just because you don’t see it yet, doesn’t mean it isn’t there. God knows what he is doing, trust him, and he will lead you where you need to go and when you need to get there.

HOW TO DEAL WITH REGRET

What does it mean to regret? When we regret something, we feel the ache of a missed opportunity, we feel the disappointment of a decision we never should have made, and, oftentimes, we blame ourselves for the less than desirable outcome. To put it crassly, Regret sucks, and it can make us feel like we do too. Regrets have the potential to tear us down and send us into a pit of negativity and blame - towards ourselves, towards others, our circumstances, our finances, our upbringing, you name it, and we can blame it.

Do you have any regrets - Anything in your life that feels like an opportunity lost, or a decision you wish you could undo? How often do you think about it? Does it continue to weigh you down? Are there situations that you face on a regular basis that keep reminding you and making it difficult to let go?

If you are willing, I want to invite you to do something with me. Think about 1 regret that you have in your life - Just 1. Bring it to mind, right now. One of my biggest regrets, that I continue to struggle with, is in my relationship with my kids. They, so innocently, look to me for everything - for entertainment, for their essential needs, to see what I do and how I react in certain situations - and, to be frank, I blow it so much. I lose my temper when they need patience. I’m selfish, when instead I should tend to their needs. And overall, being a dad has made me realize, just how imperfect my love is.

I have many regrets in my life and carrying these regrets - being weighed down by them - is exhausting, it’s defeating, it’s depressing, and disappointing. It makes me sad to remember times when I messed. Times when I should have done better but I didn’t. But, then I am reminded of the gospel. Come on, you know it. We are saved by Grace, through faith, not by works so that no one may boast. No amount of working, will save my soul. No amount of succeeding, will make me “more worthy.” And no amount of failing, will disqualify me, from living the life I was created for and being the person I was created to be.

Jesus didn’t die on the cross for nothing. He died for you and for me, glory be to his name. Because of the cross, when we look back to our moments of regret, we will find only an empty room. Regrets vanish. The tomb is empty. Jesus is risen. Living in the reality of the resurrection, means that all shame and regret are gone and we have been given a clean slate, not just today, but every single day. Newness and fullness of life is at hand, let’s walk in it together today. I want you to know this, you are forgiven.

Get Your Eyes Checked

When was the last time you cleaned your lenses?

👇 LET'S CONNECT 👇

INSTAGRAM

TIK TOK

YOUTUBE

BLOG

COFFEE

TRANSCRIPT

Do you ever feel like your to-do list just weighs you down? Too much to do. Too little time. Task after task. Burden on top of burden. By the end of the day, you are depleted. Nothing left in the tank. You go home and your family doesn’t get your best because you are too drained. Go to sleep. Only to wake up and repeat the cycle again the next day.

Doesn’t that feel off to you? Don’t you want to give your family your best? Don’t you think they deserve to get more than just a shadow of who you really are?

But how? How do we break the cycle?

Do you remember being a child? The mindset you had? How carefree you were? The only thing on your list of things to do was simply to enjoy each day. Play outside. Hang out with friends. Decide between basketball, football, soccer, or tag. Playing hide and seek. The list goes on.

Now track with me here. What would it look like, to live your adult life in the same way - the same mindset? What if your list of things to do wasn’t so much a burden, but instead, a list of things to enjoy? A guide to structure your enjoyment of the day, if you will. Sure the activities are different and you have more responsibility now, but what if instead of your responsibilities being things that weigh you down, they were just a helpful guide by which you enjoy life?

Perspective. Focus. Choice. Action.

Consider this for a moment? What if you need new lenses? I.E. perspective. What if the answer to your enjoyment of life, isn’t a set of different tasks, or a different to-do list, or a different job, or any external change at all? What if the answer is internal? You... me... what if we are looking at things all wrong.

Well, what other way is there to look and see everything? Remember that “kid” mindset we were talking about? Jesus. Like not as an exclamatory word that an adult would use, but like as a kid, remember? Jesus was the answer to everything. As simple as that is, there is a lot of truth in that. Isn’t that interesting? How the simple shallow answers as a child, turn into deep oceans as an adult? A whole new depth of meaning.

When Jesus becomes the lens through which we see everything - like EVERYTHING and EVERYONE - we are at least one step closer to living the life we were created to live.

Thank you so much for listening to this episode. If you got value, if this put you in a better mindset, it would mean a lot to me if you left a review and shared it with someone you love. Remember friend, you have a gift, and it is your responsibility and your opportunity to share it with the world. So go out, and do it.
