Finding Then Losing Family: A Journey of Resilience
In this episode of Siblings by Circumstance, host LizzyB interviews Sam, a 25-year-old visual artist who navigated adoption, foster care, and a complex reunion with her biological family. Sam’s search for her roots unraveled a shocking ”mic drop” secret: her biological siblings were raised to believe their birth mother was actually their older sister. To protect this fragile house of cards, a heavy burden of family paranoia and censorship was placed on Sam from a young age. The episode also explores the neurological benefits of inclusion alongside a critical look at profit-driven online support groups that censor positive healing. Ultimately, Sam shares how she overcame the pain of sibling estrangement by relying on early therapy, choosing unconditional friendships, and finding the inner strength to show up for herself.

Geschwistergeister: Memories of Sibling Ghosts
This Siblings by Circumstance podcast episode explores the isolating and undefined grief of sibling estrangement, contrasting its lack of societal framework with the structured finality of marital divorce. Host Lizzie B. divides this relational breakdown into a stark equation between the active ”estranger” and the blindsided, passive ”estranged.” To process the unique trauma of navigating family-centric holidays, she introduces the German term Geschwistergeister (sibling ghosts) to replace the inadequate label of ”former sibling.” Ultimately, drawing from the psychological survival strategies of Viktor Frankl, the episode emphasizes that while individuals cannot control being shunned, they retain the ultimate freedom to choose their own attitude. By decoupling from traditional expectations, those suffering from family fractures can learn to rise above the psychic stress and peacefully love their sibling ghosts from afar.

Sibling Estrangement: You are Not Alone, Episode 1
Welcome to the Siblings of Circumstance podcast. This podcast is a supplement to the group I started on Facebook, Sibling Estrangement Support Through Engagement, where you will be seen, heard, and understood for surviving the range of emotions and unique stages of grief that we all must go through to process and survive this unique pain, this ambiguous grief of mourning the living.
The cover art for the song is a piece my mother drew while in her 20s.
It shows two children, one offering up a ball to play with the other child. However, the other child is not really there. You can see through the image to the fence that is behind the other child.
That pretty much sums up estrangement for me. People are there, living their lives, carrying on, and yet family members are not allowed into your orbit or you’ve been cast out of theirs. Let’s talk about that.
Our theme song was created on SUNO, an AI platform that created this beautiful piece.
It’s called Soft Edges in the Morning, and I described it as a new dawn, a new chance to adjust your perspective and to soften to the growth and change of a new reality - that is estrangement.
