[…] Fundamentally, they build up a network of statistical relationships between words, which words are likely to follow which other words. But they do that on a very, very rich, deep level. A more primitive version of this might be a Markov chain, which is how a lot of autocompletes work. You enter the text, hello, my name, and a Markov chain is probably going to say is will be the next word. It's very unlikely to say zebra is going to be the next word because it's not seen very many examples of people saying, hello, my name, zebra. Is is far more commonly going to appear. But where a Markov chain predicts the next word based on a very small fixed window of preceding words, it might look back three or four words. […]
