[…] My dad mentioned it on a phone call and then sent it to me in the mail. It's the only time he's done that in my adulthood. And it was this thousand page epic about a circus starting from its ramshackle origins in 1865 as it adds acts and personalities clash until it is one of the grand circus trains of Europe. Gary Jennings, the author, toured with a circus for years to research it, and it is just stunning from every angle. I haven't read it for a second time, but I know I will someday. It's also for some reason out of print. If you're going out looking for a copy, Forge did release The Doorstop as three separate pocket paperback volumes, and I think that's a nice way to tackle it.
