It started taking shape with people like Juan Atkins and Derek May and Kevin Saunderson, this group that's known as the Belleville Three from Belleville, Michigan. And instead of continuously to describe what this music is, I think it's going to be best to just hear it. Here's the kick drum. It's from the Roland TR-909 drum machine. It's one of the drum machines that became closely associated with techno. So now we're going to add the clap sound from the TR-909 drum machine. And now some hi-hat. And some more percussive sounds to fill out the beat. […]
