Is God A Genie?

In this very first episode, we’re asking a bold question: Is God a genie?

This conversation is raw, honest, and Spirit-led. We talk about the ways many of us, especially early in our faith, fall into the mindset of treating God transactionally. We pray, we fast, we serve, and we expect something in return. But what happens when He doesn’t come through the way we thought He would? What happens when we realize our prayers were more about getting something than knowing Him?

Each of us shares personal experiences that exposed those tendencies in our own walks. From fasting to get our nails done, to praying for blessings without first surrendering our hearts, to watching others wrestle with disappointment when God doesn’t respond the way they expected—this episode is filled with real stories, laughter, conviction, and truth.

We explore what it looks like to have a genuine relationship with God. One that isn’t built on outcomes but on intimacy. One where we learn to ask better questions, like “What are You trying to teach me in this season?” or “How do You want to use me here?” instead of “When will You fix this?”

We talk about the challenges of spiritual maturity and why obedience, even when it’s uncomfortable, is a key part of growth. We also touch on the dangers of church cultures that promise material blessings as proof of God’s favor and why joy, peace, and transformation are far more powerful signs of God’s presence.

If you’ve ever questioned your motives in prayer, felt frustrated when things didn’t go your way, or wondered how to grow closer to God without getting caught up in performance or outcomes, this episode is for you.

We pray it encourages you to reflect on your own relationship with the Lord. Ask yourself honestly: Have I been approaching God like a genie? Am I seeking His heart or just His hand?

Thank you for being here. Subscribe to the Talitha Podcast and join the conversation in the comments. Let us know where this message met you. We’re so excited to grow with you as we walk out this journey of faith together.

God bless you, and see you in the next episode.
