Examining the Films and Career of Child Actress and Singer Betty Brewer

This is a bit of a different episode. There are two mid 19th century  actresses and singers by the name of Betty Brewer and though efforts have been made online to separate their careers, they remain enmeshed. Indeed, I found that newspapers were confusing the two even back when they were active. This episode distinguishes who did what, focusing on the Betty Brewer who was a singer before she became a child actress, daughter of an Ozark lead miner. This was part of the studio hype, that she came from harsh circumstances, which was questioned by some reviewers (it was true). Another part of the studio hype was that she was unattractive, which wasn't true, she instead wasn't glamorous. She was supposed to connect as the honest, down home girl. Betty came out strong and quickly faded. I don't know what happened, but as a distant relative I took an interest, watched her films, and was surprised at how good she was. This episode examines the several movies she was in that are available for viewing.

We love Hammer's Scream of Fear and Paranoiac and trash Nightmare

Three Hammer films today! We're thrilled over Oliver Reed going all out in "Paranoiac" (that scene on the stairs!) and eventually ponder what if it had been the tale of two Reeds. "Scream of Fear" was also named "Taste of Fear" and we wonder about the ability to taste terror while method acting with Susan Strasberg. Those two films were so good that by the time Hammer got to "Nightmare" it was tired. Aaron and I separately, bizarrely, came to the conclusion they wanted Sandra Dee for that one, in which case it would have been amazing, but that wasn't happening so they lost the lead actress part way through. Oh, where was Sandra Dee?! Pretending Sandra Dee was in it makes it better.

Oops! All Mason! (James Mason strangles his real life wife Pamela in three films, which is obvious fodder for discussion.)

Aaron and I discuss James Mason strangling his wife Pamela in not just one but three films! We have fun examining "I Met a Murderer", "The Upturned Glass", and "Portrait of The Murderer". Pamela and James not only starred together in these films, they are responsible for the stories. And then for good measure we add "The Night Has Eyes", in which Pamela doesn't appear but when it's a full moon James must take his pills so that he doesn't go out and strangle things.
