Episode 14 - Visit Vindolanda Museum and Archaeological Site

Today's episode is on Vindolanda Museum and Archaeological site. I visited the site back in June 2013 and it was very beautiful. The archaeologist who led the tour was very knowledable. So I highly recommend taking the tour if you can. The site is also close to Hadrian's wall so it's a great detour for those who are interested in walking the length of the wall. I would definitely recommend getting a car to get around the various forts near the Hadrian's wall especially if you are not interested in walking. Some famous items found in Vindolanda include the Vindolanda tablets (they were the oldest written document found in the UK at one point) and boxing gloves. Further excavations have also yielded shoes, combs, knives and skeletons of various domesticated and wild animals that indicate that the fort was big and encoporated families of soldiers. One of tablets include a party invitation from a wife of a soldier to another! The tablets are now in the British Museum in London.

There are many places to stay near Vindolanda such as campsites, cottages and Bed and Breakfast. Visit Northumberland has information on places you can stay in Northumberland. The link for the website is found below.

Vindolanda's website: https://www.vindolanda.com/

Visit Northumberland: https://www.visitnorthumberland.com/

#endlessexperiences #visitnorthumberland #northumberland #northumberlandcoast #northumberland_pics #northumberlandcounty #northumberlandnationalpark #northumberland_uk #visitnorthumberland #england #ukshots #ukshooters #instagram #inst #roamtheplanet #staycation #discovernorthumberland #explorenorthumberland #lovetotravel #instatravel #travelphotography #staycation #staycationuk #nationalpark #nationalparksuk #enjoynorthumberland #lovenorthumberland #endlessexperiences #hadrianswall #hikemore #ukhikers #vindolanda #roman #military #militaryfort #hadrian
