Ep. 09 - Francesco Aglieri Rinella (Fotografo Italiano)

Francesco first popped onto my radar on X. No, nothing dodgy! I mean X as in the old Twitter (it’s thriving, fyi).

Anyway, film photography is alive and well.

Especially in Italy’s far south.

Sicily, to be precise, where Francesco is from. Although he currently lives on the mainland.

And having been to Italy a few times since living in Switzerland, I could immediately appreciate his passion - or passione - for his craft.

Needles to say, I was very stoked when he said he’d be open to sitting down for a chat.

You know, just some everyday awesomeness.

We kept it short(ish), with the goal of doing a few more catch-ups, as we both enjoy talking about photography both as a craft and as a medium for experiencing ones surroundings more deeply.

He photographs exclusively on medium format film cameras for his projects.

It’s slow.

It’s real.

But above all, it’s bellissimo!

From his website:

“Through my photos, I strive to uncover hidden truths that require an open-minded approach to be fully understood. Each shot captures a unique moment, brimming with emotions and significance.

Inspired by the artistic movement "New Topographics," I am committed to capturing landscapes altered by human intervention and their interconnectedness. Through my images, I document how time shapes our environment, revealing beauty even in seemingly mundane things.”

One of his big ventures at the moment is documenting the American Midwest on film, and he’s just gotten back from a trip there.

You can catch up with that project in his newsletter on Substack, here.

Watch and listen to the (video) podcast above and join us for some friendly discussion in the comments below.

Also, remember to check out Francesco on the line:

* View his website, here.

* Connect with him on Instagram, here.

* Stalk him on X, here.

Enjoy.

Any thoughts?

Comment below!

—

Until the next conversation ✌🏽.

Ciao!

Cornelius

Get full access to Alpine Dispatches at www.alpinedispatches.com/subscribe

Ep. 08 - Scott Martin from Scott Martin Images

Scott is a fellow South African also residing in the Northern Hemisphere.

Although he’s in the USA and I’m in Europe.

He’s travelled extensively and been on some amazing adventures, many of which were image making related.

We know some of the same people and touch base online every now and then via social media comments.

But we’ve never met in person.

I’ve been an admirer of his work for a while now.

His imagery has a very natural, earthy feel. You can see he really connects with his subjects. And this shows in the images. I feel like I know the people in his images personally already.

As photographers we are often more comfortable in highlighting other people / subjects, and are by nature a bit camera shy.

Ironic, I know!

So, needless to say, I was super stoked he was willing to sit down with me for a conversation about how he pursues his everyday awesomeness.

Scott’s talent and passion for showcasing the things he cares about truly shines through in his work, and that’s part of what I find so interesting.

Watch and listen to the (video) podcast above and join us for some fun discussion in the comments below.

And remember to check out Scott on the line:

* View his website, here.

* Connect with him on Instagram, here.

Enjoy.

Any thoughts?

Comment below!

—

Until the next conversation ✌🏽.

Cornelius

Get full access to Alpine Dispatches at www.alpinedispatches.com/subscribe

Ep. 07 - Jacques Marais, Free Ranging Storyteller and Professional Photographer

Early evening, glass of red wine in hand, about to head down the rabbit hole that is the wild career and life of Jacques Marais - thus far.

We may be on two different continents and in two different hemispheres, but we were not going to let that get in the way of a good old (virtual) fireside chat.

And a chat it was, my longest thus far, and we could easily have gone for much longer - to be continued for sure!

Jacques is a genuine all round nice guy, father and husband.

Photography and adventure wise, he’s (almost) done it all:

* Authored multiple books and guide books (both the writing and imagery)

* Dog-sledded with Inuit hunters in East Greenland

* Traversed outer Mongolia

* Served as an Ambassador for Nikon, Sony and Pentax

* Runs his own media company in Jacques Marais Media

* Etc.

To say I was a bit nervous going into this episode is a bit of an understatement.

I’ve always looked up to him during my career as a professional photographer, and admired his transition from the analog era into the digital one.

Without missing a beat.

It was an honour that he took the time to sit down with me, especially at the start of my podcast journey when I’m still finding my feet.

But then again, that’s just the type of guy he is.

Everyday awesomeness, indeed.

Watch and listen to the (video) podcast above and join us for some fun discussion in the comments below.

And remember to check out Jacques on the line, here:

* View his website (JM Media), here.

* Check out his extensive photo portfolio, here.

* Read some of his many guide books, here.

* Connect with him on Facebook, here.

* Stalk him on Instagram, here.

* Find him X (Twitter), here.

Enjoy.

Any thoughts?

Comment below!

—

Until the next conversation ✌🏽.

Cornelius

Get full access to Alpine Dispatches at www.alpinedispatches.com/subscribe
