About The Bible and Beyond
The Bible and Beyond podcast is a series of interviews with scholars who are able to unlock mysteries from extra-canonical books, forgotten scriptures, so-called 'gnostic' gospels, as well as the Bible. Host Shirley Paulson, Ph.D., and her guests explore historical and spiritual questions about Jesus, gender, women, salvation, healing, and the meaning of life. The discoveries these scholars share don't always fit with what we've been told, but time and again they lead us toward a deeper intimacy with Jesus.

[…] And when you think about Jesus who dies through crucifixion, which is a punishment for enslaved workers. He's a person who doesn't seem to have a father, which is not in the gospel of Mark. At least there's no reference to Joseph. This is not what we would expect. The way he's treated elements of his biography, they really resonate with the experience of enslaved people, of a captive people in the aftermath of the first Jewish war. And I think when we think about who's reading these texts, who's writing them, once we start to think about slavery, then certain stories that Jesus participates in sound a lot more friendly to enslaved people than we previously thought.
