[…] It's very late in the year. As of this summer, 2026, it's been 60 years since that first ascent of the Kachatna Mountains titular spire by David Roberts' expedition. And remarkably, In that whole period of time, to the best of our knowledge, the peak has been climbed exclusively by first ascents. In other words, no climber has reached the summit by way of a repeat second ascent. Can you think of any other formation with that kind of pedigree? Well, it'd be common in Asia, you know, in the big mountains of Asia. That would not be unusual at all. But in North America, it's very unusual. Perhaps even more remarkably, in that intervening 60 years, nobody had climbed the striking south face of Kachatna Spire. leaving it ripe for the picking by Michael Talstad and Eli Spitalnik. […]
