About The David Kaufer Podcast: The Lighter Side of the Spectrum
Welcome to “The Lighter Side of the Spectrum,” a podcast where we explore how to find joy, connection, and growth while navigating the challenges of parenting kids and teens on the autism spectrum. Hosted by David Kaufer, father of a 19-year-old non-speaking autistic son, this podcast offers a fresh, uplifting perspective on life with autism—focusing on the moments of triumph as well as the obstacles.David’s son was unable to communicate reliably until he was almost 17, when they discovered and began using the spelling methodology that profoundly changed his life. His inspiring journey from silence to communication serves as a beacon of hope for anyone needing encouragement in the autism community. In addition to sharing his personal experiences, David tackles broader issues, such as building inclusion into healthcare practices to ensure those on the spectrum receive compassionate, competent care. Renee Kaufer on Parenting Twins, Autism & Presuming Competence
David welcomes his wife Renee to discuss their nearly 21-year journey parenting twin sons Stone and Ty, including Stone’s early regression, autism diagnosis, Renee’s initial denial, and David’s push for early intervention. They describe managing contrasting twin temperaments, balancing work and caregiving roles, and trying therapies such as speech, ABA, motor planning, and special preschool while confronting low expectations from professionals. Renee explains how Spelling to Communicate became a turning point after seeing Stone communicate pain from ill-fitting shoes, leading to expanded communication and new views of Stone’s abilities. They recount a contentious fight with the school district to allow communication supports, Stone’s move to Brightmont, and later gains from brain enhancement therapy. Segments include Renee’s tip to build support networks through vulnerability, debunking myths about autistic people lacking emotion, parent regrets, and hope found in the Special Olympics community.

Trust, Vaccines, and Autism Care: Pediatrician Ryan Hassan
David peaks with Dr. Ryan Hassan, a board-certified pediatrician in Portland with an MPH and medical director of Boost Oregon. Hassan explains that pediatrics is low-paid, vaccine counseling is time-consuming and financially disadvantageous, and reduced vaccination would increase revenue through more illness visits; he also notes anti-vaccine messaging can be highly profitable. They discuss the complexity of healthcare pricing transparency, the erosion of community trust, and “wellness” grifting. Hassan addresses autism by emphasizing de-stigmatization, noting genetic and prenatal indicators, and focusing on supporting skills rather than “curing” autism. The episode closes with parenting tips, personal anecdotes, and resources for Pediatric Associates and Boost Oregon.

Daniel Unumb on Turning Rights Into Real Support
David welcomes attorney Daniel Unumb, president and founder of the Autism Legal Resource Center, to discuss autism and the law, especially how families can find help when facing denials, school resistance, or “that’s our policy.” Unumb shares his family’s journey after his son Ryan was diagnosed as profoundly affected and needed intensive ABA, which insurance initially refused to cover, leading Unumb and his wife to advocate for a South Carolina insurance mandate, launch the Autism Law Summit, and contribute to nationwide coverage advances including Medicaid guidance. They explore school challenges, IEP “Kabuki theater,” resource management, when to involve advocates or attorneys, and differences between IDEA/FAPE and ADA/504 access rights, including Fry v. Napoleon and issues like outside medically necessary providers in schools. Unumb offers tips (IEP-sharing among parents, protection-and-advocacy agencies, and state insurance complaints) and emphasizes parent-driven change.
