[…] The more I learned, the more time I spent in the mountains. Instead of random adventures, I trekked to sights of important moments in North Cascade grizzly history. I hiked into the lake near Mount Baker, where the survey team dispatched to find the 49th parallel shot its first grizzly. I explored the remote valley in North Cascades National Park, where the last grizzly was legally hunted in Washington State just one year before the National Park was established. I searched for red grizzly paw petroglyphs in a hidden canyon at the far northern edge of the range in Canada, and met with conservationists and researchers, some of who had spent decades working on grizzly bear recovery in the North Cascades.
