But the dark shadow of death closed down on Argos' eyes, the instant he saw Odysseus, twenty years away. He's a symbol of loyalty here, dying in happiness in his moment of recognition of his returned master. Now it's important to note here, that when Odysseus enters his own palace as a beggar, he is recapitulating, in a sense, his journey over the course of the Odyssey as a whole.
