The United States needs to stay in the lead on AI. And you cannot do safety from second place. Hanging over the regulatory debate in the U.S. is China. And the frequently broadcast fear that if Washington ties American hands in Silicon Valley, it will fall behind Beijing, which regulates its tech sector far more stringently. I know what everyone's thinking. If we slow down and we lose to China, then that's going to be it. The idea that the U.S. is engaged in an arms race with China to sort of win at AI development has shaped the development of AI for over the past decade. […]
