[…] So, in places like Hastings, Battle, Lewis and Rye, and several other villages, one of them Wadhurst, where C Company of the 5th Battalion was based, all of them in those places were Drill halls, physical buildings that was essentially the depot of the company, one of those eight companies in that area. So it gave it a local feel. The Sinkports being a Territorial Force Battalion. what did that really mean well they weren't full-time soldiers they were part-time soldiers saturday night soldiers as the phrase was at the time much of the rest of the army looked down upon them because they were not proper soldiers they were people who went about their normal civilian lives and jobs and then volunteered for service in a part-time unit But that did involve some degree of commitment.
