Every week, Double Board-Certified Veterinary Behaviourist and Veterinarian of over 25 years, Dr. Katrin Jahn provides education, knowledge and inspiration on all things Veterinary Behaviour Medicine aka Veterinary Psychiatry. […] So, you know, we're talking about both dogs and cats here, but I guess dogs more commonly, that's the more common questions I get asked. And the question, I guess, is around, I suppose, doubling up or layering up of alpha-2 agonist medications, so one for the pre-visit pharmaceutical, and then the second one might then be an injectable dexmedetomidine or medetomidine, for example, to facilitate kind of pre-medication, very commonly used, again, in a small animal practice before general anesthesia. So it's a great question, because I think whenever we kind of layer up on medications from the same neurotransmitter effect class, we always have to kind of be careful about exacerbating potential side effects or unwanted effects.
