About The Tikvah Podcast

The Tikvah Fund is a philanthropic foundation and ideas institution committed to supporting the intellectual, religious, and political leaders of the Jewish people and the Jewish State. Tikvah runs and invests in a wide range of initiatives in Israel, the United States, and around the world, including educational programs, publications, and fellowships. Our animating mission and guiding spirit is to advance Jewish excellence and Jewish flourishing in the modern age. Tikvah is politically Zionist, economically free-market oriented, culturally traditional, and theologically open-minded. Yet in all issues and subjects, we welcome vigorous debate and big arguments. Our institutes, programs, and publications all reflect this spirit of bringing forward the serious alternatives for what the Jewish future should look like, and bringing Jewish thinking and leaders into conversation with Western political, moral, and economic thought.

Ruth Wisse on Grievance, Gratitude, and the Transmission of Jewish Confidence

This has been a momentous week in American politics and, whether you cheer or mourn the results of the 2026 midterm elections, the Jewish people find themselves in a different America than they were in last week. In difficult times, there is no one better to strengthen Jewish spines than Ruth Wisse, longtime professor of Yiddish literature at Harvard, and, for the last many years, a senior distinguished fellow at Tikvah. It was earlier this year, in March, that she delivered the National Endowment for the Humanities' distinguished Jefferson Lecture. Professor Wisse recently sat down at the Altneu synagogue in New York City with Caroline Bryk, the co-director of Tikvah's Jewish Parents Forum. They discussed grievance and gratitude, the transmission of Jewish confidence, the relationship of Jews and America, and what Professor Wisse would have us read.

Why shouldn't kids in grade one and two study laws of how to cross the street? Transportation laws. Laws that relate to them in some ways, right? […]
