[…] Chapter 16, Truth. After more than two months of chemotherapy, facing my final round, I was no longer a fighter. My chemo appointments were no longer events or mountains for which I prepared. The good days that had provided a sense of life between the troughs didn't arrive anymore. I felt a sudden empathy for the Secretary of Defense. It was as if I'd run out of troops and supplies, and even the National Guard and police were all used up. I had nothing left with which to defend myself from this cancer or its treatments. the very truth that I'd hidden from everyone, including myself, emerged.
