[…] But in terms of, if you like, middle class people living in the city, there were very few of them left because the middle class really had started deserting the centre of Dublin since there was a middle class in this country. So the whole idea was to try and reverse that historic decline of the inner city. And, you know, I always was struck by the shocking fact that that the population of the inner city had declined so much that from a high point of about a quarter of a million in the mid-1920s, in 1926, to what turned out to be the lowest point, which is just 84,000 in 1991. And as a result of the campaign that got underway following the publication of the destruction of Dublin, and the Dublin Crisis Conference, which Deirdre Kelly and Victor Griffin and David Norris and Nick Rafferty and others and myself were involved in organising in the Synod Hall in Christchurch Place in February 1986.
