[…] Only they were carrying the possessions of a dead boy. Tutankhamen was probably around 19 when he died. Now, this is young under any circumstances, but particularly inconvenient when you are a pharaoh and your burial is supposed to have been years in the making. Tombs had to be carved and painted, coffins fitted, shrines gilded, furniture, clothing, food, and ritual objects prepared. A king was expected to enter the afterlife with everything he might need for eternity— and Tutankhamen's court had only weeks to pull it together. So the result was something of a royal rush job. His tomb was unusually small and may originally have been intended for someone else. […]
