Joining Brian and myself in our studio we are delighted to have Dr Catriona Jenkinson join us. Catriona is one of our fantastic internal medicine residents here at the RVC. Cat gave a talk to the hospital on erythrocytosis and thought that it would have interest to a wider audience, not a common condition, though how often can you prescribe a course of leeches? […] So can I just ask Larson when you said if you've got a dog that walks in that's been playing with the dead snake so it is your minimum thing if you're unsure to look at clotting times is that is that your what you say okay I'm not sure that's the test that I'm going to do. Yeah for an asymptomatic patient most of us reach for clotting times first either PTA PTT an activated clotting time or for hospitals you know like ours that tend to do biscoolastic testing we're mainly focusing on the clotting times on rotem or or tag I suppose it's the R time on tag but the reality is that those biscoolastic tests are usually flatline if the animal's been invented anyway because they don't just consume clotting factors they consume fightbrinogen I suppose it's a clotting factor but which with no fightbrinogen they can't make any semblance of a clot so it's it's super useful in those cases that have no clinical signs at the time of presentation.
