Voices of the Forgotten

About Voices of the Forgotten

Voices of the Forgotten is a podcast dedicated to the stories that never got the attention they deserved. Hosted by former CBS investigative journalist Cindy Gersch, each episode focuses on who the victims were, what went wrong, and the questions that still remain unanswered. No sensationalism. No speculation for clicks. Just careful storytelling, stalled investigations, and a commitment to remembering those who were left behind.

Case #24: Erased, The Disappearance of Joanne Coughlin

Friday, December 27, 1974. Two days after Christmas, in Youngstown, Ohio. Joanne Elaine Coughlin, 21, an aspiring actress and Youngstown State student, had plans that evening: a health spa in Boardman, then her boyfriend’s house, then a movie. According to reporting, she was never seen again. Her car, a 1968 Ford Fairlane, has never been found. Her family had her declared legally dead in 1985. Nearly 52 years later, her case remains open, and no one has been charged. In this episode, we look at: Who Joanne was, from her family and the people who covered her case Her last day and the sign-in sheet her family has questioned A reported scream near the quarries off Villa Marie Road, and why that account has never been tied to her A bank book that surfaced days after she vanished The theories, and why they are not evidence A mother who paid for a private search of the quarries What detectives are doing now, including NamUs, DNA and dental records Why a case like this can still be solved Everything in this episode is drawn from documented sources. Anything alleged, reported or unconfirmed is identified as such. Nobody has been charged, and nothing in this episode suggests any particular person is responsible. Have information? Case #23:The Quiet Case on South Ogden Street, The Unsolved Murder of Rose Piechocki

On June 14, 2007, Rose Piechocki, 67, was found in a child’s swimming pool behind her home on South Ogden Street in Buffalo’s Lovejoy neighborhood. According to the Buffalo News, police announced four days later that her death was a homicide. More than 19 years later, I can’t find an arrest or a named suspect, and the public record doesn’t say how she died. In this episode, I walk through who Rose was, the neighborhood once known as Iron Island, what was reported in the first days (including a 2007 reward and a comment about “persons of interest” that I could not fully confirm), what Buffalo was dealing with in 2007, and the long list of things we still don’t know. Nobody has been charged. Everything here is drawn from published sources, and anything unconfirmed is labeled as such. Rose deserves answers. If you have information, please contact: Buffalo Police TIPCALL Line: 716-847-2255 (call or text; anonymous online tips are also available through the City of Buffalo “Report a Tip” page) Buffalo Police Cold Case Squad: 716-851-4511 Crime Stoppers of WNY: 716-867-6161 (anonymous), or crimestopperswny.org In an emergency, call 911. Did you know Rose? I’d like to hear about her life, not just her death. Case #22: The Man Who Walked Out Alone, The Murder of Jennifer Cohen

This episode looks at who Jennifer was before the headlines. Her brother remembers a sister who skipped school just to spend the day with him. She got sober in 2001 and stayed sober for close to a decade, then relapsed and lost custody of her sons. We walk through what is documented, what the reports disagree on, and what remains unverified, with attribution on every claim. We also cover why cases like hers stall and the questions still worth asking. If you recognize the man in the footage, or know anything about Jennifer's final hours, contact NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). You do not have to give your name. If you or someone you love is struggling with addiction, the SAMHSA National Helpline is free, confidential, and open 24/7: 1-800-662-4357. Keep asking questions. Keep saying their names. And never let the forgotten stay forgotten. voicesoftheforgottenpod@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/716.girlinatl
