Warrior Wednesday 6/17/26, Dyess AFB First Sergeant Council

This week’s Warrior Wednesday takes a different approach as Chad Ray welcomes members of the Dyess First Sergeants Council to discuss the mission of supporting Airmen and families across the base. Joining Chad are Master Sergeant Adrian O’Neill, Tech Sergeant Edwin Rivera, and Master Sergeant Kyle Marcek, who explain the unique role of a First Sergeant and the many ways they help Airmen through life’s challenges. The conversation highlights the work of Operation Warm Heart, a nonprofit effort that provides emergency assistance, holiday support, travel assistance for family emergencies, and other critical resources when Airmen need help most. They also discuss partnerships with the Dyess We Care Team, community projects that assist veterans and military families, random acts of kindness for Airmen, Angel Tree programs, dorm outreach, and efforts to help service members get home for the holidays. The group also shares personal stories about military service, the friendships built over a career in uniform, and the opportunities the Air Force provides through education, travel, and professional development. Plus, they discuss a community car wash fundraiser benefiting Operation Warm Heart and how local support directly impacts Airmen stationed at Dyess Air Force Base.

Warrior Wednesday 4/29/26, USAF Gordy Tatro (Vietnam)

This Warrior Wednesday is a deeply personal one as Chad Ray welcomes Air Force veteran Gordy Tatro — and yes, he’s also the father of The Raider’s own Dustin Tatro. Born and raised in Michigan, Gordy shares how a shaky freshman year in college during the Vietnam draft era pushed him to make a life-changing choice: enlist in the U.S. Air Force in 1966. Following a family legacy of service — including a father who flew B-17s in World War II — Gordy trained in military photography and reconnaissance, then deployed to Saigon before serving at Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base in Thailand. There, he worked with a reconnaissance technical squadron during the Rolling Thunder era, helping process film from missions that tracked enemy movement along the Ho Chi Minh Trail using side-looking radar and aerial imagery. Gordy also reflects on the painful reality many Vietnam veterans faced when they returned home to a divided America, and offers thoughtful advice for young people considering military service today. The conversation closes with a moving, unexpected tribute from Dustin, thanking his father publicly for the first time for the role he played in helping fellow troops make it home alive. A powerful and unforgettable episode.

Warrior Wednesday 4/15/26, US Army SSgt Rafael Nieves (Vietnam)

On this special Warrior Wednesday with Chad Ray, we honor Rafael Nieves — a Vietnam veteran, Purple Heart recipient, and true American hero. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Rafi shares how he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968, completed basic training at Fort Gordon, advanced infantry training at Fort Ord, and was sent to Vietnam in December of that year. Assigned to the 101st Airborne Division in the north near the former imperial city of Huế, he describes the realities of helicopter air assaults into the jungle, combat operations in the aftermath of the Tet Offensive, and the day he was wounded by enemy fire just after the Fourth of July in 1969. After evacuation through Vietnam, Japan, and finally Fort Dix, New Jersey, Rafi returned to Puerto Rico — where his story of service continued. Using VA education benefits, he earned multiple degrees and spent decades helping fellow veterans through the VA, first as a contact officer and later as a rehabilitation counselor. It’s a powerful conversation about sacrifice, resilience, and continuing to serve long after the battlefield.
